Dick Groat was an All-American at Duke and signed by the Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1952. Groat would debut on June 19 of that season, then miss the next two years due to military service. On Sept. 29, 1957, Groat made the final defensive play at New York's closing Polo Grounds.
