Most of the A's nicknames are well-known to baseball fans. However it is tough to understate the brilliance of Herb Washington's nickname. Herb was called the "Hurricane" because he was known as the "designated runner" on the team. Herb was even given the position of "Designated runner" on his Topps baseball card.

STORY

Once more in '74.  It started as a rally cry for the season, but the Oakland Athletics delivered on the promise and became one of the best teams of all-time by winning their third consecutive World Series Title. The Swingin A's were the hottest thing in the Bay Area led by the hitting exploits of Reggie Jackson and Captain Sal Bando. Packed with some power bats, it was really the pitching that carried them to a title.  Cy Young winner Catfish Hunter and Vida Blue were a formidable duo and the athletics had one of the best closers of all-time in Rollie Fingers to slam the door.
