History

On June 25, 1950, Communist troops of North Korea invaded South Korea. U.S. forces spearheaded 16 countries’ armed forces in the United Nations’ “policing action” to defend South Korea’s freedom. In September 1950 General MacArthur unleashed Operation Chromite’s seaborne assault on Inchon to relieve the pressure on the Pusan perimeter. In October/November 1950, the Soviet-equipped Chinese Army crossed the Yalu River to aid North Korea. Outnumbered, the U.S. and U.N. forces valiantly withdrew from the frozen Chosin Reservoir, and fought-off Communist human wave attacks in April/May 1951. From 1951-53 a stalemate, trench warfare, dogfights over Mig Alley, and negotiations ensued. On July 27, 1953, an armistice was signed at Panmunjom that created a demilitarized zone along the 38th Parallel between North and South Korea. In 1950, Topps issued two Freedom’s War Sets consisting of 203 Cards in all.
